Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Systems: How It Works
Reverse osmosis is a type of water purification system used in many Colorado homes. It works by removing chemicals, contaminants, and impurities from drinking water using a high-pressure pump and semi-permeable membrane. The process is completed in several stages:
- Sediment pre-filter: The water is moved through a mechanical filter that removes large particles and sediment such as dirt, rust, mud, and algae.
- Carbon pre-filter: An activated carbon filter is used to remove impurities that cause water to taste and smell unpleasant. By attracting and bonding with positively charged ions it also removes compounds like chlorine and chloramines. Sometimes, a second carbon pre-filter is used for additional purification.
- RO membrane: Next, a semipermeable reverse osmosis membrane is used to remove undesired matter and substances like sodium, high levels of lead, dissolved minerals, and fluoride.
- Post carbon filter: An additional activated carbon filter is used to purify the water one last time to make sure that it is clear and clean.
