Is Lakewood’s Drinking Water Safe?

One of the most common questions we’re asked by our customers in Lakewood is, is the water safe to drink? In all truth, it depends on who you ask.

Lakewood’s water supply is managed by the Green Mountain Water and Sanitation District. The District obtains all of its water from Denver Water. Water tests are conducted weekly in Lakewood by GMWSD in an effort to make sure that chlorine and temperature levels are up to standard. Water treatment is overseen by Denver Water.

Denver Water claims that the water supply is safe to drink and is compliant with federal and state laws. However, independent and third party sources have come to different conclusions. They assert that just because water is legal does not mean it is safe.

Lakewood Water Contaminants

According to various resources including independent, third-party studies, numerous contaminants have been found in Lakewood’s water supply including Arsenic, Bromodichloromethane, Chloroform, Dibromoacetic acid, Dibromochloromethane, Dichloroacetic acid, Haloacetic acids, Radium, and Trichloroacetic acid.

In particular, concerns have been raised regarding lead contamination. In the past, the GMWSD was made aware of the possibility of lead service lines and galvanized main lines in certain neighborhoods in Lakewood. These lines have since been replaced.

However, this does not mean that every home in Lakewood has “safe” drinking water. Contaminants can be introduced to water through the corrosion of household plumbing, erosion of natural deposits, and other sources. This is why it is important to invest in a water filtration or purification system.

Neighborhoods At Risk for Water Quality Issues

The following neighborhoods in Lakewood may be at high risk for having poor water quality. Many of these neighborhoods contain older homes with outdated plumbing and fixtures including galvanized steel pipes which are known for producing drinking water hazards.

Glennon Heights

The neighborhood of Glennon Heights has a history of having water quality issues. GMWSD has stated that this neighborhood is susceptible to having galvanized piping from the water main to the meter pit and galvanized piping inside the individual residences.

Two Creeks

Two Creeks is one of Lakewood’s oldest neighborhoods and contains numerous homes built before 1920 and between the years of 1920-1930. The potential for outdated plumbing and agriculture run-off could mean that this neighborhood may be at high risk for water quality issues.

Eiber

Eiber is a historic neighborhood in Lakewood with deep agricultural roots. Many homes in this neighborhood are over 100 years old. The strong potential for corroded household plumbing, runoff from herbicide and fertilizer, and runoff from orchards and croplands could mean that homes in this neighborhood may be at higher risk of having water quality issues.

Importance of Water Purification & Filtration

Installing a water purification or filtration system for your Lakewood home is important because it limits your exposure to water contaminants. Having access to clean, safe water for drinking, cleaning, and hygiene purposes can benefit your quality of life in many ways including:

  • Prevents disease and adverse health effects:  Water contaminants, such as harmful chemicals, pesticides, bacteria, and particles can cause illness and disease.
  • Protects children and elderly family members: Studies show that children and elderly people may be more prone to experiencing health issues from contaminated tap water.
  • Eliminates the need for bottled water: Bottled water is more costly than tap water and continues to negatively affect the environment.
  • Better taste: Purified tap water is not only healthier, but also tastes and smells better and is more pleasant to consume.
  • Better for your skin and hair: Washing your skin and hair with purified water allows it to remain healthy and limits its exposure to contaminants.

Water Softener System Benefits

In Lakewood, hard water is often an issue. Installing a water softener system can help you overcome challenges related to hard water and improve the clarity, scent, and taste of your water supply. Some of the benefits of water softeners include:

  • Better for cleaning: Filtered water is better for cleaning clothes and dishes. Hard water can leave spots on dishes, make it more difficult to clean your clothes, and may leave behind a soapy residue.
  • Extends the lifespan of household appliances: Appliances run more efficiently and last longer when you use a water softener system.
  • Better for pipes and plumbing: Soft water is easier on your pipes and plumbing. Hard water may result in the accumulation of buildup in your pipes.
  • Softer skin and hair: Hard water is harsh on your skin and hair and may cause it to be dry, brittle, or damaged.
  • Prevents buildup in hot water heater: Hard water may result in the accumulation of minerals and buildup in your hot water tank and negatively impact its efficiency. Installing a water softener system may help improve your water heater’s performance and reduce your household energy costs.

Balancing the Pros and Cons of Well Water for Lakewood Homes

For homeowners in Lakewood, Colorado, well water offers access to natural groundwater, but it requires diligent maintenance due to its vulnerability to contamination. Unlike treated city water, well water can contain an array of contaminants, such as bacteria, sediment, pesticides, heavy metals, and even radioactivity and radionuclides. Ensuring the safety of your well water supply demands regular maintenance, including water quality testing, filter replacements, and potential disinfection methods, to guarantee a consistent and clean source of drinking water for Lakewood households.

Enhancing The Well Water Quality For Your Lakewood Home

For homeowners in Lakewood, Colorado, well water presents a valuable opportunity to access natural groundwater, but it comes with the responsibility of regular maintenance due to its susceptibility to contamination. Unlike treated city water, well water may contain various contaminants stemming from sources like agricultural runoff, industrial activities, and natural elements in the soil. Common contaminants found in well water in this region encompass bacteria (e.g., coliform and E. coli), nitrates, arsenic, lead, iron, manganese, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Consistent water testing is crucial to detect the presence of these contaminants and employ effective filtration and purification measures, ensuring a dependable and clean drinking water supply for Lakewood households.
