Experts believe that the most likely cause of contamination was firefighting foam used in training exercises at the facility.
Hundreds of off-base private wells are located within one to two miles of the academy. A recent study found that some residents in the Security-Widefield area have elevated levels of PFAS in their blood. These levels were much higher than average national levels.
