Is South Western Colorado's Drinking Water Safe?

Is the water safe to drink? is one of our South Wester Colorado’s customers’ most frequent inquiries. Actually, it really depends on whom you ask.

The South Western Water Conservation District oversees the water supply in South Western Colorado. Denver Water provides all of the District’s water needs. SWWD performs water tests on a weekly basis in South Western Colorado to check that the temperature and chlorine levels are within acceptable ranges. Denver Water is in charge of water treatment.

Denver Water asserts that the water supply is lawful and compliant with both federal and state regulations, and is safe to drink. However, different conclusions have been reached by independent and outside sources. They contend that just because water is drinkable does not necessarily mean it is secure.

South Western Colorado Water Contaminants

Numerous contaminants have been discovered in South Western Colorado’s water supply, including arsenic, bromodichloromethane, chloroform, dichloroacetic acid, haloacetic acids, radium, and trichloroacetic acid, according to a variety of sources, including independent, third-party studies.

Concerns have been raised in particular about lead contamination. The SWWD has previously been informed that there may have been lead service lines and galvanized main lines in some South Western Colorado neighborhoods. Since then, these lines have been changed.

This does not imply, however, that every residence in South Western Colorado has access to “safe” drinking water. Water contamination can occur from a variety of sources, including erosion of natural deposits, corrosion of household plumbing, and other sources. This is why purchasing a water filtration or purification system is crucial.

Neighborhoods At Risk for Water Quality Issues

The following neighborhoods in South Western Colorado may be at high risk for having poor water quality. Many of these neighborhoods contain older homes with outdated plumbing and fixtures including galvanized steel pipes which are known for producing drinking water hazards.

There has been a history of poor water quality in Telluride neighborhoods. SWWD that the galvanized piping inside the individual homes and the galvanized piping running from the water main to the meter pit are both potential hazards in this area.

Many homes in Silverton, Colorado were constructed before 1920 and between 1920 and 1930. This community may be at a high risk for problems with water quality because of the potential for old plumbing and runoff from nearby agricultural operations.

South Western Colorado’s Ouray is a historic community with a long history in agriculture. This area has many homes that are more than a century old. Homes in this area may be at a higher risk of having water quality problems due to the high likelihood of corroded household plumbing, runoff from herbicide and fertilizer, and runoff from orchards and croplands.

Montrose, Colorado is a beautiful town located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Its clear waters are a big part of what makes Montrose such a special place. Unfortunately, Montrose’s water supply is under threat from pollution and development. As more people move to Montrose, the demand for water increases. This puts pressure on the local water treatment plant, which can sometimes struggle to keep up with demand.

Pagosa Springs

Pagosa Springs is a relatively small and wonderful town located in southwest Colorado. However, one of the most important things to consider when visiting Pagosa Springs is the quality of the water. deposits can cause hard water, which can make it difficult to clean dishes, clothes, and yourself. A water softener can help to improve the quality of your water by removing these deposits.

Gunnison, Colorado is one of the many great towns in southwestern Colorado. Gunnison’s history of poor water quality dates back to the early days of settlement when miners used explosives to access gold deposits in the area. Water purification and softeners can help remove minerals from water, making it easier on plumbing and appliances and improving the taste of drinking water.

Importance of Water Purification & Filtration

Your exposure to water contaminants is minimized by installing a water purification or filtration system in your South Western Colorado home. Your quality of life can be improved in a variety of ways by having access to clean, safe water for drinking, cleaning, and hygiene purposes, including:

  • Prevents disease and adverse health effects: Health problems can be brought on by water contaminants like dangerous chemicals, pesticides, bacteria, and particles.
  • Protects children and elderly family members:According to studies, children and the elderly may be more susceptible to health problems brought on by contaminated tap water.
  • Eliminates the need for bottled water:Bottled water continues to have a negative impact on the environment and is more expensive than tap water.
  • Better taste: In addition to being healthier, purified tap water also tastes and smells better and is more pleasant to drink.
  • Better for your skin and hair:You can keep your skin and hair healthy and reduce exposure to toxins by washing them with purified water.

Water Softener System Benefits

The problem of hard water is common in South Western Colorado. You can overcome problems caused by hard water and enhance the taste, smell, and clarity of your water supply by installing a water softener system. The following are just a few advantages of water softeners:

  • Better for cleaning:Cleaning clothes and dishes is better done with filtered water. Hard water may leave behind a soapy residue, leave stains on your dishes, and make it harder to wash your clothes.
  • Extends the lifespan of household appliances:When you use a water softener system, appliances operate more effectively and last longer.
  • Better for pipes and plumbing:It’s easier on your pipes and plumbing to use soft water. Your pipes may develop buildup as a result of using hard water.
  • Softer skin and hair: Your skin and hair may become dry, brittle, or damaged if you use hard water on them.
  • Prevents buildup in hot water heater:Your hot water tank may become clogged with minerals from hard water, which will reduce its effectiveness. The performance of your water heater may be enhanced and your household’s energy costs may be decreased by installing a water softener system.
